We are one mission away from the end of the original GuildWars game (I've completed all of the others with at least one character, and [personal profile] columbina has finished two of the three), but the last mission - well, it's called Hell's Precipice, and it's hard and pretty tedious, and at one point Col said, "You know, they don't give you anything for finishing this anyway." And after a while we gave up on it. So now... it only took them three years, but they are fixing that. As part of the third anniversary festivities, they are introducing prizes for finishing Prophecies. And I guess now we have no excuse.

(Neither one of us has been playing for three years, incidentally. Col started in early 2006 and I was a few months behind.)

Via [personal profile] iko: Guillermo del Toro to direct 'Hobbit' - that in itself is interesting, but look at what they say about the 2nd movie. What are they gonna do, make that part up out of whole cloth? I can't think that Tolkien wrote enough about the "in between" part of Bilbo's life to make a movie out of. Well, we'll see.

I know I'm going to be sorry for asking this, but what kind of "prizes" does one get for finishing a video game? Free games?

Loooooot!
Although sometimes you can get a cool title (like in Lord of the Rings Online) or new abilities or something like that.

Oh, not even free games. You get an in-game item that you can't get any other way - a weapon, here. In some games, as I understand it, this kind of item might actually have significantly better stats than other weapons, but not in GuildWars. It's just a max weapon with a different skin, usually. It's a status thing. Silly, really, but I still want the damn thing. Gotta have some kind of proof that you actually finished!

But if the game is finished, what good is the weapon? How can you use it? Or is it basically like getting a gold star?

Well, "finished" doesn't mean we quit playing. There is more stuff to do. And I left out the whole topic of "hard mode" which is opened up when you finish a campaign. You can re-play the whole game, except it's way harder and supposedly you get extra loot. It's so hard that we haven't even tried it much, actually. Apparently we are not quite masochistic enough.

I'm masochistic enough but there aren't enough hours in the day.
