A couple of things....

We are one mission away from the end of the original GuildWars game (I've completed all of the others with at least one character, and [personal profile] columbina has finished two of the three), but the last mission - well, it's called Hell's Precipice, and it's hard and pretty tedious, and at one point Col said, "You know, they don't give you anything for finishing this anyway." And after a while we gave up on it. So now... it only took them three years, but they are fixing that. As part of the third anniversary festivities, they are introducing prizes for finishing Prophecies. And I guess now we have no excuse.

(Neither one of us has been playing for three years, incidentally. Col started in early 2006 and I was a few months behind.)

Via [personal profile] iko: Guillermo del Toro to direct 'Hobbit' - that in itself is interesting, but look at what they say about the 2nd movie. What are they gonna do, make that part up out of whole cloth? I can't think that Tolkien wrote enough about the "in between" part of Bilbo's life to make a movie out of. Well, we'll see.

We almost always reach a point with videogames where it stops being fun, and then we cheat. I don't know why games have to be so damn hard. Seriously, when we're trying to beat the same monster for the 20th time, and we can't save, and it's die, die, die, over and over... What the hell? We always say that it's like they assume you're 13, and you have all the time in the world for this crap. I'm not saying games need to be EASY, but there really should be ways to skip ahead when things just get too hard, or alternate routes should become available to get through the damn story. At least prizes offer some incentive. Othwerwise, you're just going nuts trying to beat a damn troll made of pixels, and after six weeks you do it and get a 3-second blare of synthisized trumpets for your trouble.

I do suspect Del Toro will do better with the Hobbit than Jackson did with the LOTR movies, unless he gives in to Jackson's pressure for battles, battles, BATTLES, half-hour long battles with a zillion CGI orcs swarming the castle! BATTLES!!! (And then two minutes of character stuff... before the next BATTLE!!!!)

I know I'm going to be sorry for asking this, but what kind of "prizes" does one get for finishing a video game? Free games?

Woot! I never had the patience to continue playing GuildWars (says the woman who has two level 70 toons in WoW and has done tons of raidin). I envy the folks that have played through it because some of the later stuff looks cool.

I have absolutely no idea what the "transition" film will be like. I figured that they would take the Hobbit and split it in half. In any case, for me it's two of my favorite filmmakers (del Toro and Jackson) coming together in this mashup of awesome collaboration. It makes me squee! Hee hee.
