Oh, I have never remembered to say that the thing that cost so much on my car repairs was a new motor for the condenser, or something to that effect. That was $500 or so. Then a new thermostat, at $200 and change. By the time we added the state inspection, which is no longer cheap, and tax, we were at nearly $850. Apparently if these things had stayed as they were it would have been Very Bad. I suspect that means as in might-have-burned-up-another-engine type of bad. (And please don't tell me about how I should have just bought a new car instead. We only have one car right now, and it needs to keep running. Even after we get another one, I would really like for this one to keep running. We certainly can't afford two new cars right now. Even if they're used.)

It turns out, now that I'm getting my ranger Tamaya up to a high enough level to tell, that rangers really rock. They stay out of the melee but they have better armor than casters. And hey, poison arrows! Tamaya cruised right though an area last night - the Cursed Lands - that ALL the rest of my characters had a horrible time with, and is now at Temple of Ages, which is great because you can run from there with more and better henchmen. (I thought I might do some adventuring with my guild while Columbine was gone, but so far I haven't. The guild has been awfully quiet lately, anyway. I still have plenty of time for potential socializing, though, since Col is not due back until the end of next week.)
Night before last I took Alessa the Warrior out and worked on her armor. Here's some cheesecake for you (at least if that mask is your kind of thing!):

That is Alessa's old armor; the only part of that set that she still has is the gauntlets. The new armor is collector armor (it looks like this) - so-called because you trade various things with NPC collectors to get it - monster drops, like troll tusks and Ancient Eyes and so forth. It's quite a bit of work - the reason I don't have the gauntlets yet is because I still need another Ebon Spider Leg. And since Mel the Monk is collecting all these things too, I need two sets of everything. (And for that matter, Tamaya is not all that far behind!)
That very ugly mask is called a Wyvern Mask, and I had it because it had better armor than anything else that was available. There is a whole set of butt-ugly armor that goes with it, too. The only reason I could stand even the mask is because this screen (which is part of the log-on process) is the only time you ever see it. (Or rather, you can choose to see it or not to see it while you're playing, and of course I chose not to!) She now has something more along the lines of Io's Kaiser Wilhelm one that I was mocking a couple of weeks ago - ugly, but not as ugly as this one.
I'm sure this is fairly obvious, but the reason you keep changing armor as you go is because better armor keeps becoming available. I think for warriors beginner armor is about level 35, then with every new area you get to you can get a better set. Alessa's new set is level 71. (And that's why you bother with collecting up all that stuff, because you can't get the level 71 armor for a good while yet any other way.)
